Background

Nearly a quarter (24.0%) of active duty military personnel reported currently smoking in 2011.  While smoking rates have decreased considerably from levels exceeding 50% in 1980, progress has remained slow since 1998 when the rate was roughly 30%.  In addition, smokeless tobacco use is also high among this population.  In 2011, 12.8% of military personnel reported using a smokeless tobacco product compared to 3.2% of the general population.
