Segments of the United States population are uniquely affected by tobacco and in some cases are targeted by the tobacco industry. Some, such as Youth and College, have a higher risk of exposure to tobacco product promotion, which leads to initiation or increased use of these dangerous products. Others, such as the Military and Behavioral Health populations, face a culture or environment of tobacco use that has existed for many decades.
Therefore, reaching these populations with tobacco control messages and cessation services is very important. It is paramount that advocates and leaders identify strategies for eliminating tobacco use disparities and promote tobacco control policies that establish smoke-free environments and increase access to cessation treatment.
