Shaping Policies | Improving Health
June 30, 2011 - Four years ago, England introduced its smokefree legislation, making it illegal to smoke in all enclosed public spaces and workplaces. A March 2011 YouGov survey demonstrates the public’s continual support of the law: 78% of England’s population supports it. Interestingly enough, almost half of English smokers—47%—are also in favor of the law. The ‘Save our Pubs’ campaign, a group funded by the tobacco industry, makes claims that the smokefree law causes pubs to close. However, a government-commissioned review of the impact of the smokefree law found that there was no significant decrease in the number of individuals visiting pubs or restaurants after the legislation was passed. In fact, a 2008-2009 study found that there has been a net increase in the number of people visiting pubs since the 2007 legislation was approved. Although the tobacco companies disapprove of the smokefree legislation, the figures demonstrate that the British population has been enjoying the four years of a smokefree England.
