Shaping Policies | Improving Health
December 22, 2011 PepsiCo has started charging workers who smoke $50 a month as an incentive to quit in the latest crackdown on the habit. The soda maker is forcing employees at its plant in Latham, New York, to pay the fee unless they go on a four to six week anti-smoking course. The move is an attempt to reduce the health care bill at the facility, which has around 400 employees. Of those around 20 per cent - some 80 people - are smokers. Workers however are furious because they claim they were not consulted over the changes. Those covered by a Teamsters contract have filed a complaint with the National Labour Relations Board calling for the plan to be shelved so they can get a better deal.
