Tennessee Lt. Gov. Ron Ramsey: Smoking Cessation Program Deserves Funding

May 26, 2011 - Tennessee’s amended budget restored funding to several programs that were initially facing cuts, including a new option for TennCare enrollees that covers smoking cessation treatments. This includes over-the-counter cessation aids, prescription medication, and counseling. Tennessee’s conservative Lt. Governor Ron Ramsey stated that although he has fought against government spending throughout his political career, he believes that smoking cessation is an effective use of government funds. He argues that the return on investment is well worth the expenditure since the state spent $680 million in the past year caring for TennCare enrollees suffering from smoking related illnesses. He explained, “If the state is going to pay one way or another, it is better to do it on the front end rather than the back end. It is better and cheaper to remove the cigarette from the smoker’s hand than it is to remove the cancer from the smoker’s lung.” Ramsey argues that helping Tennesseans quit smoking will improve overall health and save taxpayer dollars in the long run.
