Prediction: Comprehensive Smoking Bans Across U.S by 2020

April 25, 2011 - Federal health officials of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention predict that every state may ban smoking in public places by the year 2020. Within the last 10 years, 26 states have adopted this ban. Ten states have laws that ban smoking in at least one out of three public places: workplaces, bars, or restaurants. A recent CDC report estimates that nearly half of U.S residents are already covered by comprehensive indoor smoking bans. Only seven states have no indoor smoking restrictions at all, though some areas within the states may. These states are Indiana, Kentucky, Mississippi, South Carolina, Texas, West Virginia and Wyoming. All states have been under tremendous pressure by public health officials to implement bans on public smoking. Though the prediction is by no means a definitive conclusion, most agree that it is very likely that the U.S will have smoking bans across all state lines by 2020.
