Shaping Policies | Improving Health
January 27, 2011 - A vaccine to help curb nicotine addiction is currently being studied and has had positive results in its phase III trials. The vaccine binds to nicotine and prevents it from crossing into the blood stream where it would travel to the brain. Of the patients who received the vaccine, 16% were able to stop smoking compared to the 6% who received a placebo.
The vaccine has the potential to work with other drug treatments that increase neurotransmitters in the brain or bind to receptors in the brain to help decrease nicotine withdrawal symptoms.
