Less Australians Smoking After Tobacco Tax Increase

September 24, 2010 - The Australian government has noticed a significant decrease in smoking rates after increased taxes on tobacco.  According to a new report, as many as 300,000 people quit smoking after the taxes on tobacco were increased by 25% this past April. Smoking cessation expert Associate Professor John Litt from Flinders University said, “From this research it appears this move was the right one when it comes to trying to reduce smoking levels.” Less than one third of the smokers surveyed said they would be willing to consult a pharmacist to quit smoking, while 58% would consult their general practitioner.  Only 16% of respondents said that the tax increase will not stop them from smoking and they would ‘continue to smoke at any price.’
