Shaping Policies | Improving Health
February 25, 2011 - The American Lung Association recently launched a new campaign, “Quitter in You,” to change the way Americans view quitting smoking. The program acknowledges that past quit attempts are not failures or wasted efforts, but normal and necessary steps to quitting smoking. Millions of Americans resolve to quit smoking but remain unsuccessful every year. However, six out of ten smokers require multiple attempts before quitting for good. “Quitting smoking is the single most important step a smoker can take to improve his or her health. Unfortunately, many people try to quit cold turkey and don’t seek out the help they need in advance to successfully quit,” said Mary Ella Douglas, smoking cessation expert at the American Lung Association. The Quitter in You campaign provides a number of resources to smokers to help them quit, including an online smoking cessation program, group clinics, and a telephone helpline.
